September is Healthy Aging Month, and as we focus on ways to improve our overall health, we must not neglect the health of our eyes. It is a fact that the risk of eye disease and vision loss increases as we age. Here are a few simple steps to maintain healthy eyes:
- EAT HEALTHY. Eating fruits and vegetables is a great place to start. These foods are filled with the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need. Dark green, leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, and collard greens which contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamins essential for macula health, are the best options. Fish such as salmon, tuna, and halibut are beneficial to your health as well. These three types of fish contain high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to maintaining healthy eyes.
- MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Being overweight increases your risk for diabetes and high blood pressure. Both of these diseases can lead to retinal and glaucoma problems, which can cause vision loss.
- DON’T SMOKE. Smoking is detrimental to the health of your eyes as well as the rest of your body. Smoking has been linked to an increased risk for age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye diseases, all of which can lead to vision loss and blindness.
- PROTECT YOUR EYES. Wearing sunglasses and a brimmed hat will help protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV radiation. Also, remember to use protective eyewear when playing sports or engaging in hazardous activities around the house or at work.
Having a comprehensive, dilated eye exam every year, or as recommended by your eye doctor, can help detect age-related eye diseases. Early detection and treatment can help preserve your vision for a lifetime. At Eye Specialists of Mid-Florida, P.A., we specialize in caring for your special eyes.
